I got these at work yesterday rather than let them rot, I brought them home to put them to good use. Cole slaw anyone?
My Grandmother’s Blog Fodder
My grandmother cracks me up. When I call my mother and she’s with my grandmother, I normally get passed to her. I love talking to her. She does say somethings that make me wonder, specifically when she passes along obit information on someone I don’t even know.
Here’s the conversation:
Me: Hi Grandma,
Her: How are you doing (calls me by my middle name)
Me: Fine, I’m rockin’ it out (I say such things to keep things interesting)
Her: Do you remember Glenda Jones (name changed — I’ll stop with the parentheses already –I can’t believe I spelled that word correctly)
Me: No
Her: Yes, you do. They lived next to us when your mother was growing up.
Me: Grandma, I wasn’t alive when my mom was growing up so how would I know them. Did they still live next door when I was a kid?
Her: No, they moved away when your mother was in high school.
Me: Well, did they visit after moving away?
Her: No, but they had that dog that would always bark all night long, your grandfather hated it but would never say anything.
Me: Yeah, grandpa’s that kind of person, never to stir up trouble.
Her: No, he doesn’t but that dog would really drive him crazy. But the Jones family were nice people. I wish they hadn’t moved away.
Me: So what’s with Glenda, this person, I don’t know.
Her: She died yesterday.
Me: Well, I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for brightening up my day.
The funny thing is apparently this is a grandmother thing because I was just talking to someone the other day and they say the same thing happened to them.
(some of the conversation has been changed, exaggerated and enhanced for humor for the sake of this blog. a similar conversation, i assure you, has happened at least 5 times. now i just say “Did he/she die” at the beginning of the conversation)
Tribe Tryin’
School Daze
I hated this time of the year. I’d watch TV and see an ad for “Back To School Savings.”
Each time, I’d see that I’d know summer was over and it was back to the books. I hated school. It always bored me. I can’t believe it’s that time of year already. Not only does a commercial play touting savings on clothes during every break, I even just saw an Internet ad with the same message.
My mother works at a school and she goes back (along with the students) on Tuesday. It just seems so early. By the way, it’s her birthday this weekend (Happy Birthday early!) The Tuesday start is somewhat of a tradition in my school district. This year, it’s the same thing and it’s a good idea. Ease the students back into the whole school routine. The three weeks following include Fair Day, Labor Day and an In-Service Day for the teachers.
Still, my sympathies go out to all of the students who have to go back to classes,
I’m Still Here…
For the past two days, I’ve felt so distanced from the Internet because it’s been very busy at work.
I worked overnight earlier this week and now I’m working days. I’m not that sleepy but I do feel run down and I might be am a little agitable. I had to apologize to one of my co-workers today for how I handled a situation. I didn’t think I was being confrontational but apparently that’s how I came off. I don’t like that sort of thing happening. ‘Nuff said here about that.
I will say this however, it seems like practically everyone is off this week at work. We are doing okay at filling in and making things function as normal.
Over the past two days, I wanted to talk about the Rock Hall’s expansion out to other cities. Rock Hall brass say it will only help spur Cleveland tourism. We will have to wait and see about that.
I wanted to talk about my continued obsession with the Olympics. I can’t believe Roger Federer got beat. Are we seeing the end of his era?
I can’t wait for this weekend. I need the rest after this week. I hope to chill a little. Tomorrow night, you’re likely to see some Indians pictures on the blog. Let’s just hope they win.
As for tonight, I’m just going to take deep breaths and calm down a little,
Carrie’s Ode To Beer
My co-worker, Carrie, has secretly had a blog, nothingbutthenews.typepad.com and recently told me about it.
I’ve been wanting to post her “Ode To Beer” that she composed while she was pregnant with her daughter for some time. I figure this is the perfect time to do so. I hope you appreciate it as much as I did.
“Oh beer, how i miss thee,
you made me feel so frisky.
I miss your lovely golden hue.
Hell, at this point, a domestic would do.
You taunt me, gleaming, in that glass.
Not having you MAY drive me to kick some ass.
My constant companion, my forever friend,
I hate that our love affair had to come to an end.
But like Arnold once said, I will be back.
Until then I’ll back off, you’re a pregnant chick’s crack.”
Amen,
taawd’s thoughts Turns Three!
Well, it’s my blog’s birthday. It was three years ago when I first started blogging. So much has changed since then. I have so many new friends. I live somewhere different. You end up reflecting a little bit on days like these. Of course, my real day of reflection is just a little more than a month away.
Let’s Talk Sports
More specifically, let’s talk Olympics.
The talk around work seems to center around the 2008 Summer Games. I don’t know how many different sports you can watch in one day. Today, so far, it’s been volleyball, beach volleyball, weightlifting (the sport that includes the snatch and clean & jerk, Mel, there’s a blog post there for you I’m sure) and finally tennis. {edit: I wanted to include a theory by Chris H. He’s long asserted something isn’t a sport unless it involves balls. This is why I originally italicized the world sport.}
I’m watching Lleyton Hewitt (Go Aussie! A shout-out to brissiemum2) take on Rafael Nadal. By the way, the Spaniard will move up and replace my boy, Roger Federer, at the top of the ranks. {fast forward} I just got back from a bike ride to Steelyard Commons and now Roger Federer is struggling against Rafael Arevalo of El Salvador, ranked 447th in the world. I cheated and found out he won. By the way, if you’re watching the Olympics, you may not know that a lot of the commentators are not actually in Beijing but back in the NBC studios in New York. You have to listen carefully to the audio at the beginning.
The Olympics are addicting. At least to me, I know I’m not alone in this camp. I think Americans are losing a lot of sleep.
Cleveland Bloggers Unite!
I’m a member of thirtysomething bloggers on ning.com. I know other people are members of twentysomething bloggers (don’t worry, your day is coming!!) I figure we should have our own place to play on ning called clevelandbloggers.
I haven’t used ning very much but I created clevelandbloggers. So if you have a blog and you’re a Clevelander (Northern Ohio applies,) join up today! You might as well, there’s no cost, no effort involved and you might meet some other great bloggers in the process.
Take it from me, there are some great bloggers out there I wouldn’t have ever met if it wasn’t for blogging, let’s get a little organized (Allison, I know that word scares you!) If you don’t have a blog, you should start one, everyone’s doing it.
Obsessive Olympic Watcher
I don’t know why but this always happens to me.
When Wimbledon comes on, I have to watch it all of the time during the fortnight.
Same thing applies to the Olympics, especially the Summer Games.
I’ve watched swimming, handball (really?), diving, boxing, more diving, tennis (of course) and basketball.
Oh, then there’s gymnastics. Team USA didn’t look like they were going for the gold last night during qualifying rounds. Gymnasts out of bounds, falling off of the uneven bars. I wasn’t prepared to see them fall apart like that.
I’m now watching Olympic boxing. Apparently, Cleveland native Raynell Williams is one of the best boxers on the USA’s team. My TV hasn’t left Universal HD, NBC or any of the other Olympic HD outlets.
I missed the opening ceremonies because I was enjoying a great dinner at Bar Cento but the games themselves have been great so far.
Here’s to more great action,
